Junior Squash
Northern Squash Club has a very popular junior section
with over 100 active junior members.
Saturday Junior Coaching Sessions
Junior coaching caters for all standards.
The day is split into one-hour sessions which are graded to allow progression
as the individual improves.
The basic format for each session is:
5 minute warm-up
5 minutes stretching exercises
20 minutes shot demonstration and practices (max 4 per court)
25 minutes mini competition
5 minutes fun races
Each course is organised into a block of six-weeks (pre-paid) dealing
with a basic shot each week (serve, drive, volley, drop / lob, boast)
followed by a one-hour American scoring tournament in the final session
where everyone plays everyone else.
This tournament provides the basis for who should progress to the next
level.
Express Engineering sponsor the Junior section enabling us to provide
a free T-shirt to every junior and to give prizes for the course competitions.
Only SRA-qualified coaches are used for these courses.
We currently run seven courses (9 am to 4 pm).
Development
Junior Competitions
An Under-13 Mixed Open Junior Competition is held on the last Sunday of
every month.
The participants are grouped in leagues of 4 or 5 on ability and play
each other once to 15 points American scoring.
Every junior receives a prize and we produce a ranking list, which is
sent out with the next competition application form.
These tournaments have proven so popular that we are introducing an Over-13
years competition.
We always attract 50+ juniors to these competitions.
Mid-week Advanced Training
To complement the Saturday coaching, we now run two advanced training
sessions mid-week to work on more advanced shots, tactics etc.
Promising juniors from the weekend sessions fill these places.
Progression to Adult Squads
We are now encouraging some of our older juniors to enter the internal
adult leagues.
The Men's 5th team was entered into the county leagues last season with
adults playing 1 and 2 and the remaining three places being filled on
a rotational basis by our better juniors.
